Here, right now, you are looking at a
picture. Really looking, really seeing … So different from your ordinary experience,
isn’t it?
The usual “real world” experience is to glance
about some, preoccupied in your thoughts – in your verbalizations, really. Words
float through your brain as you note various sights: car, light, sun, cloud,
flower, grass, dandelions … Words, words, more words ... And the instant you SAY ”cloud,” “flower,” “sun,” or dandelions,” you stop SEEING what caught
your attention!
Words are powerful abstractions; they generalize
experience to facilitate communication;
but there is so much more to behold
than these mere tokens can convey! And so much life we miss out on in the breech.
Friedrich
Nietzsche wrote “That for which we find words is something already dead in our hearts.”
If you meditate on this, you will find it is true. Direct experience, unmediated
by language, is infinitely richer than the shallow trickle of words through which
so much of our consciousness flows.
Direct experience,
unmediated by language! Practice this. Remind yourself throughout the day. See without saying …
This is the first step
in meditative practice, and it can change your life!
